Left Lincoln by 8:30 that morning knowing that there was another long day ahead. Eastern Nebraska and Iowa are about as interesting as Illinois to drive through. We stopped at a Culver’s east of Des Moines in Iowa.
We arrived back at Rick’s house just after 5:00 pm in one piece
No injuries, no car problems during the entire trip. A success!
Save for a few challenges, I believe that we all had a great time during the last great adventure.
Maybe forty-seven years on us all allowed for more time just hanging and looking out at the scenery rather than questing to climb one more peak to see what wonders it held. A challenge was trying to capture a Humming bird in flight rather than backpacking, camping and eating somewhat sub-standard fare.
Ten days, 2500.1 miles round trip brought us back to where we started, enriched by the experience.
Looking at the few pictures that I took on my phone camera, that good as they may be, they cannot capture the scenery that we saw every day. The vistas driving the dirt road up to “The Lost Creek Trail” were magnificent although the area experienced a burn many years before. It was growing back beautifully grasses to shrubs, to Aspens, to conifers.
What began as a wine fueled comment by Jim after Scottish fest “I’d like to do one more trip with you guys”, quickly (seemingly) became a reality.

Another beautiful morning in Colorado, sat out and enjoyed the morning. We still had the car loaded and checked out by 9:00
We took a different route out of Estes Park heading east. The highway followed a river twisting through a canyon with cliffs on both sides, again was a really pretty drive. Every turn offered a different scene. Knowing that the views will be much different soon, we cherished that drive. After some time, the landscape opened up, we suddenly found ourselves in wheat and hay fields. Back to the prairie. Each stop along the way out of Colorado and into Nebraska brought higher temperatures. When we reached Lincoln Nebraska, it was 100 degrees out. Stopped again at the Hampton Inn in Nebraska, cleaned up and decided to go back to the “Down the Hatch” for the world’s best catfish.

Cooked a big breakfast at the cabin to use up some of the food, no hiking plans for today.
Drove into town to shop. Oddly found what we needed at the first shop. Stopped in a few others and walked along the river walked for a bit. There was a nice place for lunch in town. We needed one more trip to the Safeway for supper that night to make a special last night supper.
Once again, Tim fired up the grill and cooked Pork Chops along with mashed potatoes and green beans (all fresh this time) pared with some Cooper’s Hawk Old Vine Zin. A tribute to our last trail supper from forty-seven years earlier. (This was much better).

Neither bear, nor elk at the cabin this morning, plan to go back to the park. The plan was to drive to the Bear Lake area. It is a very popular destination in the park, parking at the lake is difficult. There is a remote parking area and shuttle busses to take groups to the lake and back again. The hike around the lake is not very long, but it is spectacular. However, it is very crowded, it was hard to take pictures without a bunch of yahoos in the way.
While there we took a side hike up to Nymph Lake. There was a constant stream of people going up the trail and back down again. So many people were unbelievably rude. One nearly found themselves checked out of the way. (People, they are the worst)! We constantly stepped aside for downhill hikers as is hiking etiquette, only to be passed by others climbing behind us. Made it to the lake and took some photos. We travelled down the same way as the climb up. Going down, nobody moved out of our way. They all but shouldered their way past. It was all very rude.
Had supper at the carriage house restaurant adjacent to the Stanley Hotel in Estes Park. It was the inspiration for the Overlook Hotel featured in The Shining. Some of the scenes from the mini- series were shot in the hotel, we had tickets for the Shining tour later that night. The tour was great, the hotel was beautiful and fun to see the inside of the place. Tomorrow is our last day in Colorado. Having a great time, but will be glad to be home. No hiking planned, we’ll go into town to pick up some souvenirs to take home.
As much as I hate to admit it, I believe that my backpacking days are behind me. Hiking in the mountains is one of my very favorite things in life, but it’s really stressful on an old body.

Planned to drive up to Rocky Mountain National Park today. Jim and Bill were again sitting on the deck when we saw a Black Bear cub stroll between the cabins where the elks were last night. It just walked between the cabins and disappeared in the front parking lot. There was a different cow elk and two twin calves this morning. There is fencing around the planted trees at the resort to keep the elk from browsing all of the foliage.
We arranged for park entry passes for the days that we were in Estes Park. By mid-morning, we were in the queue to enter the park. It’s hard to grasp the shear numbers of visitors that go to the park every day. The Park Service limits the amount of people that can enter every day, but it is still crowded. The plan today was to drive up to the Alpine Visitor’s center and then hike up to the 12,000-foot summit. Tim walked up ahead as if on a garden stroll. Bill, on the other hand had a really hard time breathing and climbing the whole way. It was definitely worth the climb once the summit was reached. Fortunately, everyone was patient with my slowness.
We feasted on steaks and baked potatoes that night with Coopers Hawk wine. What a day!

2024-06-20 Colorado Vacation - Day 6 - Leave Bear Cub Lodge and Arrive at Mountain Village at Lake Estes Cabin 9 in Estes Park Colorado

Left the Pike cabin in the morning heading to Estes Park. Stopped a tavern in town for lunch, then walked to the lodge at the resort for a drink since we could not move in until 4:00 pm. The cabin was very nice, 2 bedroom 2.5 baths, big deck. Went grocery shopping again. This time with a better plan. Tim grilled brats on the grill that night. It was really nice having cooking facilities at both places so we only ate out a few times. We were sitting out on the deck at dusk and Jim noticed a cow elk and her calf in a grassy area between our cabin and the next. She seemed unfazed at our presence. The calf looked ok, but the cow was limping. They are so big, it’s hard to grasp. The calf, still in spots and nursing was the size of a mature White-Tailed Deer that we are accustomed to seeing. They bedded down for a while until some idiot rode by on a bike and spooked them away. It was exciting to us to be so up close and personal to an elk since they are foreign to us. In Estes Park, they are so numerous, it’s like seeing a squirrel in the yard.
The cabin was located on the big reservoir with a running path mostly around the perimeter. There were a lot of runners and dog walkers passing by, makes one out of breath just watching.

We awoke to find the day a little chilly (40’s) and overcast. Pike’s Peak normally observable was hidden in the clouds. We prepped for the hike and left late morning. The trail head was only twenty off miles (as the crow flies) from the cabin, but took nearly an hour and a half to drive there mostly on unpaved roads. The drive up was spectacular, we stopped often to take photos and take in the views. There had been an extensive fire through the area years before, but was reforesting nicely. It had been decades since we were there, but the area seemed entirely different. We decided that we were at a different trail head. It was a nice hike all the same. We walked in about a mile or so along a stream, it was a beautiful walk. We packed a lunch and stopped on the way down the mountain to eat.
The last of the rotisserie chicken was eaten that night. This was the last night in the Pike cabin, so we prepped for travelling up north the next day.

Tuesday morning found Rick sick as a dog in bed having spent a miserable night before. He had trouble breathing and was horribly congested. It was decided at that point that it would be better to forgo the Pike’s Peak trip and lie low at the cabin. Climbing to fourteen thousand feet would be a bad scene for Rick. In lieu of Pike’s Peak, we drove to Manitou Springs later that morning to revisit “Garden of the Gods” The day was sunny and bright this time, when we visited the area in 1977, it was rainy. Stopped at the visitor’s center, restaurant for a Bison burger. We walked a little bit and mostly drove through the park. Definitely a great place to see. Jim built a fire in the outside fire pit when we returned to the cabin. (See various pictures). The plan for tomorrow is to return to “The Goose Creek Scenic Area”.

The cabin was advertised as being on acreage, but there were neighbors within view. That being said we thought that we would walk around the property. That didn’t take very long before it was decided that the property lines were pretty close. Since we were at elevation we took it easy. Later in the day we drove back into Woodland Park to see the sights. Oddly enough, most places were closed on Monday. We walked around for a bit and returned to the cabin to read and relax. Tim grilled big burgers out for supper that night. The next day was the train trip to the top of Pike’s Peak already planned, but parking had to be determined as it was limited in the immediate area of the station.

Left Lincoln about 9:00 or so after watching an older man trying desperately to scoop up a bowl of very thick oatmeal into his bowl.
We arrived in the small town near the Pike’s Peak area house in late afternoon. There was a Walmart in the town of Woodland Park, so we stopped there to pick up groceries. One would think that four adults after spending two days in the car would have made some kind of food plan before we got to the store. Alas, that was not the case. We just began to roam through the grocery section of the Walmart without a clue as if to say “I don’t know what to get, my wife does the shopping”. Except for Jim, he started to grab items with abandon. After some time, we started to get an idea of what we needed like a three-pound package of bacon and three rotisserie chickens for supper that night.
We found the cabin after some adventuresome driving glad that it was June and not February. The cabin was beautiful, had three bedrooms, a big great room and wraparound deck facing Pike’s Peak. We settled in for the night, thankful for the safe trip so far and glad to be there.

2024-06-15 Colorado Vacation - Day 1 - Hampton Inn Lincoln Nebraska

To understand this trip, one must go back to a time when we were quite young and got by with very little.
It all really began in the summer of 1976. I don’t remember where the initial idea or logistics arose, but a plan was hashed out that we would take a backpacking trip in the Shawnee National Forest in southern Illinois. Tim Onori would drive his new in process conversion van, taking Rick and Bill back to school for the fall semester. Mitch Winn and Tim Jaeger were to accompany the group as well. Seemed like a good plan to young men on their own that basically plan by the seat of their pants.
Many things were learned on that trip, not the least of which was to plan more. We made it back to Carbondale safely with a great experience at the end of the week.
The following Summer 1977, Rick, Tim Onori, Jim Storey and Bill started talking about taking another trip at the end of the summer. Several years previous Rick and Tim Jaeger hiked in the Pike National Forest, Goose Creek Scenic Area outside of Manitou Springs Colorado. That seemed to be a really exciting destination for a wild adventure. We had maps and compasses (and knew how to read both), along with all of the rest of the required gear already so we just needed to plan trail food and a route for a few days on the trail. That whole adventure is another story in itself. The following summer not to be outdone with Colorado we decided to go yet farther west into the far reaches of Montana and hike Glacier National Park.
Forty-six years, grown families, and much wear and tear later we were once again gathered on a Saturday afternoon after Scottish fest at the Storey’s house when Jim suggested that it would be fun for the four of us to take “One More Adventure” while we are still together and “able” to get around. It didn’t take too much convincing to make a valid argument for a new adventure. We would conquer the Goose Creek again, this time being wiser not get lost for days on end.
Since we are all north of sixty-five, we were not backpacking and sleeping on the ground. The next morning Rick and Jim had found a house to rent in the Pikes Peak area for several days and another in the Estes Park area both in the front range of Colorado. We just needed to put money down to hold a reservation for the following summer of 2024. We all agreed that both places looked fabulous.
June 15, 2024 Saturday
We left on Saturday morning at 9:00 in a very full car heading west. In the months up to departure, Rick asked that each of us would compile a list of fifty songs to make a road trip play list. This way everyone had input in the playlist.
Since driving straight through is not reasonable (or necessary) any longer, we decided to stop for the night about halfway to the first destination in Colorado. We stopped at a motel in Lincoln Nebraska. We had supper that night at a restaurant called “Down the Hatch”. It was a good place with “world’s best Fried Catfish” according to Tim.
