BUCK, James Patrick, physician, was born at Carrollton, PA., Feb. 19, 1856, son of John and Rachel (Sherry) Buck. His parents were of German-American descent, and his ancestors were among the earliest settlers in the northern part of Cambria county. His father was a conspicuous figure in the public life of Pennsylvania, having been sheriff of his county for a number of years, besides representing his district in the state senate in 1874-75-76, and for an extended period serving as a member of the county committee. James P. Buck received his early education in the district schools and attended St. Vincent’s College, Latrobe, Pa., where he was graduated (A.M.) in 1876. On leaving college he taught school for two seasons, during which time he began the study of medicine, and after a course in anatomy at Hahnemann College in 1877 entered Jefferson Medical College, Philadelphia, where he was graduated (M.D.) in 1879. He spent the ensuing five years in the practice of his profession in Pittsburgh, and then went abroad to study. He spent two years in Vienna, at which time he became a surgeon in the Servian army, with the rank of captain, during the war between Servia, Bulgaria and Roumania, and with Dr. Bridges had charge of a military hospital. Resigning this commission, he pursued the summer course at Heidelberg University, after which he served for a time as first assistant to Prof. Hock, of the opthalmic department of the Vienna Polyclinic. He also took post-graduate work in the universities and hospitals of Berlin and Prague. In 1877 he returned to the United States and located in Chicago, where he resumed general practice, making a specialty of surgery, and rapidly acquired a large and prominent clientele. He invented and patented many valuable instruments and appliances for operative surgery. Dr. Buck was very popular with all his associates. His manners were affable, his disposition bright and sunny, and he radiated good cheer to all around him. He was an unusually successful practitioner of medicine, and an enthusiastic devotee of surgical science, with which, by unremitting study of the latest teachings and methods, he kept himself thoroughly abreast. Deeply interested in all scientific subjects, he was to the end of his life a close and intelligent student of the most recent developments in the world of science. He was an ardent lover of birds, and the spacious rooms of his beautiful home resounded with the singing of the most varied and valuable species. To the deserving poor he never refused his aid, either professionally or otherwise. His favorite recreation was motoring. He was a member of the Chicago Germania Mannerchor, the Chicago Medical Society and the American Medical Association. He was married, June 30, 1897 to Mary Catherine, daughter of Mathias Grass, one of the pioneer settlers of Chicago, and had three children: Marie Georgietta, Harold Francis Jerome and Cecil Clement Buck. Dr. Buck died in Chicago, Ill., Jan. 16, 1914.
