389. Dr Michael Joseph5 Buck (JOHN B4, JOSEPH3, JOSEPH2, NICHOLAS1) was born 13 April 1852 in Carroll Twp, Cambria Co, PA, and died 14 June 1944 in Wilkensburg, PA. He married Jane Sharbaugh 1878 in Summit, Cambria Co, PA, daughter of John Sharbaugh and Mary Daugherty. She was born 24 May 1851 in Summit, Cambria Co, PA, and died 31 May 1935.

Dr Michael J Buck obtained medical degrees from Jefferson, Hanneman, John Hopkins and Univ of Vienna,

At age 13 he accompanied Gov Andrew Curtin (PA) as dinner guests of Pres Abraham Lincoln. Lincoln sat beside Michael to "ensure he got enough to eat".

He often hired Charles Schwab for $.50 to drive him to call in the Cresson area.

From 1876 to 1878 he attended Univ of Vienna, studied under Dr Louis Pasteur and served as Army Surgeon for the Prussians in their war against Bulgaria and Turkey.

From 1878 to 1889 practiced in Altoona, PA. Studied in New York City during the winter of 1888/89.
In 1890 he moved to Baltimore, MD and purchased a "large & beautiful home".

Cambria Co. Penna Atlas (1890) estimated his worth exceeding $75,000. He had 1/3 interest in the Johnston ,Buck & Co Bank of Ebensburg and 1/2 interest in the Carrolltown Bank as well as interest in 4 hardware store in Cambria and Clearfiels Co's. Was one of the founders of "The Sunday Morning" newspaper of Altoona.

Directed operations at Cambria Hospital during the Johnstown Flood of 1889.

Practiced until his death at age 92. Lived with his son William G Buck in Wilkensburg, PA. Had four grandsons serving in WW2 ( one listed as John Hayes?, maybe from first marriage of Winifred?)

Is listed as returning to USA on 2 May 1892 thru Ellis Island from Le Havre, France onboard the 'La Champagne'
