BETHLEHEM STEEL CORP. DIRECTOR DIES IN ST. LUKE'S HOSPITAL AT 78 AFTER SHORT ILLNESS

C. Austin Buck, 78, director of Bethlehem Steel Corp.and formerly a vice-president of that corporation died at 6:15 pm yesterday in St. Luke's Hospital, Bethlehem, after a brief illness.

Mr. Buck was born in Bucksville,Bucks County, March 14, 1867. He was graduated from Lehigh University, class of 1887, with a B.S. degree in chemistry. In 1932 the university conferred upon him the degree of Doctor of Engineering in recognition of his outstanding achievements in the development of raw materials for the use of the steel industry.

Mr. Buck entered the emply of the old Bethlehem Iron Co., predecessor to Bethlehem Steel Corp. on July 1, 1887 in the capacity of assistant chemist. From 1888 to 1889 he was chemist for the Juragua Iron Co. of Cuba; 1889 to 1896 assistant chemist,Bethlehem Steel Co.;1896 to 1905,chemist; and 1905-1906 chemist and superintendent of blast furnaces,Bethlehem Steel Co. On June 30,1906 he was appointed assistant general superintendent of the Bethlehm plant, and on Oct 28,1908, became general superintendent.

On April 1,1913, Mr. Buck was appointed vice-president in charge of raw materials, continuing in this capacity until 1940, when he became consultant vice-president to the department. He also served as president of the following Bethlehem subsidiaries:

He retired Jan 1, 1942, remaining however, as director of the corporation.

KNOWN FOR VISION

During his lifetime, Mr. Buck became well known to the iron and steel industry and to the engineering profession for his vision and progressiveness. He devoted his entire energies to the advancement and upbuilding of Bethlehem Steel and was largely responsible forthe development of the Chilean and Venezuelan iron ore properties, the enlargement and modernization of the Cornwall iron mines , as well as other iron mining projects. He also was instrumental in the acquisition and development of Bethlehem's quarry properties and coal mines.

He had direct charge of the company's mines in Cuba, Chile, and Mexico and the flett of vessels that brought ores to American wharves for the corporation. He was responsible for the development of the unusual iron deposits at Tofo, Chile, including the installation of a novel electrical generative system and for the market increase in the size and handling possibilities of cargo ships.

WORLD WAR I SERVICE

During World War I he served on the Committee of Five of the War Industries Board for iron, steel, and raw materials, bringing to this post unequaled authority in scientific and engineering developments in the iron and steel industry. He also served on various tariff commissions as a representative of the industry for the United States. In 1933 Mr. Buck was invited to become a lecturer on the procurement of raw materials in Lehigh University's chemistry department, and continue in this capacity until the present date.

He was one of the originators of the Student Fellowship plan by which freshman assign their laboratory refunds toward the maintainance of research work by two Lehigh graduates each year in this department.

Mr. Buck resided at Thirteenth and Prospect Avenues, Bethlehem. He was married on Oct 16, 1892 to the late Josephine Rankey, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Rankey of Bethlehem. He was especially interested in golf and during his lifetime made it an avocation in which he was very proficient.
