1. NICHOLAS1 BUCK was born Abt. 1730 in Thionville, Alsace-Lorraine, GER/FRA, and died 13 November 1786 in Springfield Twp, Bucks Co, PA. He married (1) MARY APPOLONA KOHL 21 April 1761 in Nochamixon, Bucks Co, PA, daughter of JOHN KOHL and MARY BEHR. She was born 4 July 1743 in Nochamixon, Bucks Co, PA, and died 7 January 1765 in Springfield Twp, Bucks Co, PA. He married (2) Elizabeth Hartmann 12 May 1766 in Goshenhoppen, Berks Co, PA, daughter of Michael Hartmann and Magdalena. She was born Abt. 1745, and died 1811 in Haycock, Bucks Co, PA.

"NICHOLAS BUCK, the emigrant ancestor of many of the name, was descended from an ancient family long established in the vicinity of Thionville, Lorraine. The date of his birth is unknown. Lorraine is within the valley of the Rhine and on the frontier of Germany, Belgium, Holland and Luxembourg, and suffered severely from wars during the years between 1670 and 1733. The calamities occasioned by such long strife induced one Nicholas Buck, a singe man, to embark at Rotterdam, on the ship 'St. Andrew', for America. He arrived in Philadelphia, Sept 25, 1752. For a short time he lived near Reading, and then came by way of Goshenhoppen to Springfield township, Bucks county. There he settled down and spent the remainder of his life.
There is doubt as to the exact year of the emigration of Nicholas Buck. The ship 'Edinburgh' arrived in Philadelphia Sept 5, 1748, from Rotterdam. In the list of passengers were mentioned Michael Hartman and John Nickel Buck, the former no doubt the father of Nicholas Buck's second wife whom he married in 1766.
In 1760 he signed a petition asking for a road in Springfield township. On this he wrote his name Nickly Buck. On April 21, 1761, he married Mary Abigail, daughter of George and Barbara Kohl, of Nockamixon. The first child, Leonard, was born Sept 1, 1763, and the second son, Joseph, in 1764. The wife and mother died Jan 7, 1765, at the age of twenty-two years. On May 12, 1766, Mr. Buck married Elizabeth, daughter of Michael and Margaret Hartman. The children of the second union were: Nicholas, James, Catherine, John, Barbara, Elizabeth, Magdalen, and Mary Ann. In his last marriage recorded, the father is mentioned as a widower and farmer. In 1768 he purchased from Ludwig Nuspickel, a tract of land of forty-six acres. In 1777 he was in the Revolutionary War." (Montgomery, Morton. NICHOLAS BUCK - from "The Buck Family" by William Kirkpatrick

The immigrant ancestor of the Buck family in Pennsylvania was Nicholas Buck 1 who emigrated unmarried allegedly from the vicinity of Thionville, Lorraine Region, Department of Mozele, in the valley of the Rhine River on the frontier of Germany, Belgium, Holland and Luxembourg--either on the ship "St Andrew" or the ship "Edinburgh" which arrived at Philadelphia on 25 Sep 1752 and 5 Sep 1748, respectively. The name has been found in the Records obviously often, distorted by mistranscription or phonetically misspelled: Back, Beck, Bock, Boch, Buck, Buch, Burk, Boock, Bork.

It has been stated that for a short time after his arrival Nicholas Buck 1 resided in Reading, Berks Co, Pa. before finally settling in Springfield Township, Bucks Co, Pa. I cannot verify his residing in Reading. However, in 1760 he signed a petition asking for a road to be built in Springfield Twp, Bucks Co. In 1777 he served in the Revolutionary War. In the year 1779 he was assessed taxes in Springfield Twp for 200 acres of land. By 1781 he was assessed taxes also in Haycock Twp, Bucks Co. for 45 more acres which he had purchased from Ludwig Nuspickel. In 1782 he sold 50 acres of his farm in Springfield Twp retaining 50 acres there and 45 acres in Haycock Twp in the tax years 1782, 1783, 1784, 1785 and 1 78 6 when he died . The lands, 45 acres , in Haycock were "unimproved" in 1787, but the 150 acre farm in Springfield Twp contained two dwellings and 1 outbuilding , which housed ten inhabitants as of 1784. The birthdate of Nicholas Buck 1 has not been found. He came to this country unmarried and on 21 April 1761 he married his first wife, Mary Appolonia Kohl, born 4 July 1742/3 in Nockamixon Ir @Twp, Bucks Co, the daughter of John George Kohl and his wife Mary Barbara Behben. (Goshenhoppen Registers (GR), p 16) at whose house the marriage ceremony was performed. Four years later on 7 January 1765 she died in Springfield Twp, Bucks Co, aged 22 years. On 12 May 1766, Nicholas remarried in the Church at Goshenhoppen (now church of the Most Blessed Sacrament, Bally, Berks Co, Pa) to Elizabeth Hartman single daughter of Michael and Magdalen Hartman who had arrived on the ship "Edinburgh" on 5 Sep 1748. It should be noted that a "John Nickly Buck" also arrived on this ship. (GR, p 102; "History of Berks Co, p 473)

Nicholas 1 reportedly died, when his son, Nicholas 2, was 19 years old, on 13 Nov 1786 ("History of Berks Co," p 473). His widow, Elizabeth (Hartman) Buck remarried, on 8 May 1797, John Kolb. (GR p 181). I have nothing further on her.


By his two marriages, "Nicholas" or "John Nicholas" Buck 1 had ten children, five boys and five girls, as follows:

I am trying to find the whereabouts of "Bockhill" in Bucks County, Pennsylvania. In 1769 my 4th great-grandfather, Michael Hotz, a butcher in Philadelphia, returned to his native city of Wertheim, Baden-Wurtemburg, (Germany) on behalf of a fellow Wertheimer, Ernst Beschler, the school teacher at "Bockhill" in Bucks County. Ernst Beschler's father had died in Wertheim and Michael Hotz had gone to bring back to America, Ernst's inheritance.


A
Nicholas Buck settled in Springfield Twp., Bucks Co. and acquired 218 acres. He named his estate "Buckhill", which I sure is the above stated Bockhill. He was quite educated and saw to the education of his children, so there was a good chance of him having some sort of schooling available on his property.

BUCKSVILLE_One of the earliest of the villages founded in the township. Nicholas Buck, whose father arrived from Germany around 1752, was a wheelwright by trade. He settled in Nockamixon in 1792, purchasing 64 acres including the site of Bucksville. It became a thriving German community with a blacksmith shop and a large stone house, which today is a bed and breakfast known as the Bucksville House. Local history has it that the hotel was a speakeasy during Prohibition.
