Fr. Daniel Buck
Fr. Dan Buck was born and raised on the north side of Chicago, sharing a small Ashland Avenue apartment with his parents (now deceased) and his brother, just a couple of blocks from the parish church, Our Lady of Lourdes. He attended the archdiocesan high school, college, and graduate school seminaries and was ordained in 1971. His ministry has taken him to parish work in River Forest, Chicago, Palatine and Stickney. For the last six years he has served as associate pastor of St. Frances of Rome church in Cicero.
In addition to his pastoral work at the parish, Fr, Buck has participated, for the last ten years, as a Chaplain/Firefighter for the Stickney Fire Department. In earlier years, he performed the same function for the River Forest Fire Department. In order to better support the firefighters with whom he worked, he achieved the certification of Firefighter II from the State of Illinois in 1999. Fr. Dan has drawn great strength from working with these dedicated public safety professionals, and he will miss them and their camaraderie.
Fr. Dan has been singing with one group or another since grade school. Presently, he is part of the Niles Concert Choir, a sixty voice chorale with a distinguished 38 history, and Musicam Sacram, a young 24 voice choir dedicated to the performance of glorious sacred music both new and old. He is also in his sixth year on the board of directors of the Chicago Choral Artists, a professional group of singers formerly known as The James Chorale. He is delighted to be joining a parish with a history of fine music making.
Fr. Buck’s father worked for 43 years as an electrical engineer for the Chicago Rapid Transit Company and its successor, the Chicago Transit Authority. It’s no surprise then that both Fr. Dan and his brother, Bro. Christopher F.S.C. of St Joseph High School in Westchester, share an intense interest in railroads and in particular, in urban mass transportation. Both brothers have spent many years volunteering their time and skills at the Illinois Railway Museum in Union, Illinois. So the next time you visit this McHenry County attraction, don’t be surprised to see a familiar face behind the controls of a venerable streetcar, rapid transit train, or interurban.
Fr. Dan is thrilled to be joining the staff of St. Mary Parish. He’s kind of shy and terrible at remembering names; please be patient with him. If you see him walking or biking around town, be sure to say hello.
