James Noel Buck attended flight training in Pensacola Florida. His next transfer was to Corpus Christi, Texas where he completed flight training in December 1955 and revived his Wings of Gold. During Jan of 1956 in San Diego, California he reported to VA-145 for active duty. In the winter of 1956/57 he was assigned to the aircraft carrier USS Hornet, for a 7-month cruise in the South Pacific and Orient. On March 19th, 1957 he failed to return to his carrier because his AD (propeller) plane had crashed into the sea three miles off Alabat Island in the Philippine Islands. (Note: To locate Alabat Island, one must obtain an enlarged Manila area map. It is off Eastern Luson Island, SE of Manila in Lamon Bay.) For days planes searched the area where an oil slick appeared hoping to find Lt. jg Buck's body, but only his battered aviator helmet was retrieved.
